GIRAFE is a software which provides forecasts of plumes trajectories. Trajectories are calculated using lagrangian model FLEXPART and ECMWF meteorological fields.

GIRAFE uses fire detections of MODIS satellite in order to predict plumes trajectories, or MACC satellite data. It also uses ECMWF meteorological fields and lagrangian dispertion model : FLEXPART

At the moment two versions of GIRAFE exists :

  • GIRAFE-MODIS : MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), provides forecasts of biomass burning plumes using MODIS/TERRA and MODIS/AQUA daily fire detections. TERRA and AQUA data are from Terra and Aqua satellites, with overlapping dates for select time periods. MODIS calculates the NDSI, a measure of the difference between the infrared reflectance of snow in visible and shortwave wavelengths. For more information : MODIS TERRA.
  • GIRAFE-MACC-TNO : MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) provides forecasts of anthopogenic pollution plumes based on TNO-MACC high resolution European emission inventory of year 2007. MACC uses satellite and sophisticated computer models. TNO contribution is an emissions dataset from 2003 to 2007.

Data online

To find online data, click on the campaign that you want in "Archive", and choose the day of simulation. The you will be able to see the results of the simulation.
Then you willl be able to choose plot parameters (height, cross-section, integrated plot).

The software was first developped by AKKA Technologies SII (Toulouse) for AMMA campaign (2006). Then, it was used by LACY and LPC2E. The first logo was :

Pole-Ether payed for GIRAFE project in 2006, at its creation : Sommaire de la documentation publique de GIRAFE

In 2011, a lot of modifications where made, principaly due to ECMWF archiving modifications. In 2012, SEDOO continued the developpements and updates of GIRAFE, to be able to predict trajectories for TRAQA and SAMBBA campaigns, in summer 2012. The new logo was choosen :

For now, GIRAFE is developped by SEDOO, the data service of Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées.
